Parts of a plant
Roots, stem, leaves and flower — and the job each part does.
About 15 minutes
Step 1 · Wonder why it matters
Hook
A sunflower taller than you
Some sunflowers grow taller than a grown-up — from one tiny seed! How does a plant drink, stand up and make new seeds?
Every part of a plant has its own job. Let's meet them.
Step 2 · See it
Picture
See the parts
Start at the bottom, under the soil, and work your way up.
| Part | Where it is | Its job |
|---|---|---|
| Roots | Under the soil | Hold the plant in the ground and take in water |
| Stem | Above the soil | Holds the plant up and carries water to the leaves |
| Leaves | On the stem | Use sunlight to make food for the plant |
| Flower | At the top | Makes seeds so new plants can grow |
Step 3 · Understand how it works
Logic
Working together
Water goes in through the roots, travels up the stem and reaches the leaves.
The leaves use sunlight, air and that water to make food. The flower makes seeds. When the seeds fall to the ground, new plants can grow.
- Roots
- The part under the soil that drinks water.
- Stem
- The stalk that holds the plant up.
- Seed
- A tiny package that can grow into a new plant.
Step 4 · Have a go
Do
Have a go
Do this with a grown-up.
- 1Find a plant in the garden, park or on a windowsill.
- 2Point to the stem, the leaves and the flower if it has one.
- 3Draw the plant and label each part.
- 4Put a white flower or a stick of celery in coloured water and look at it the next day. What has happened?
Step 5 · Remember it
Recall
